Create the Loki Title Animation (Premiere Pro Tutorial)

Loki Title Animation in Adobe Premiere Pro

The brand new Disney+ series about the Marvel comic book anti-hero Loki is currently really trending. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it. Especially if you are a huge fan of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Every episode has a short title animation that I really liked so I decided to recreate it in Adobe Premiere Pro.

It looks not that hard to make and it actually isn’t. It’s just a lot of clicking and a couple effects, depending on how accurate you want it to recreate. The first step is creating the text layer in Premiere. This can be done with the text tool from the toolbar or by clicking control and T. Type your text in all caps, align it to the center of the screen, adjust the size and set the tracking between the letters a bit higher so there is enough spacing between each letter.

Once done, go the effects panel. Very import: highlight one letter, so in this case the letter L. Then adjust the font size, go 10 frames further and change the font again, keep on repeating this every 10 frames. Once done, select the next letter and go over this again. Keep on repeating for every letter but make sure to first highlight each letter.

Once done, use the gaussian blur effect to make the text super blurry, this will create kind of a glow look. Then duplicate the layer and adjust the glow to a very low radius. Also place the roughen edges effect on it to make the edges less smooth.

It’s all in the details

To make it really the same as the original title intro from the series we need to make it more noisy, grungy and scratchy. How do we do that? We place an adjustment layer above the other layers and place the noise effect on it. Adjust the noise amount to your likings. Underneath all the layers, place a textured layer (or layers). You can simply download these from the internet. Since the original intro has a bit of a blue look in the shadows and yellow look in the highlights you can make an adjustment layer again and place the lumetri color effect on it to get the right look. Then place another adjustment layer with the VR Fractal Noise effect on it. Adjust the settings and animate it overtime like in our tutorial to create a cool scratch effect. This is cooler because you don’t have to download one from the internet then. You can always nest the 2 text layers together and animate the size overtime.
