Extreme Space Jam’s Slam Dunk (After Effects Tutorial)

Space Jam: A New Legacy
Ok, I’m not gonna lie; the new Space Jam movie isn’t great. But that doesn’t mean it’s not well made! The VFX in that movie are amazing and something we can be inspired by again.
In this video we’re looking at James Lebron’s slam dunk and the neon trail he leaves behind.

Creating HUD’s
With Adobe After Effects we can create HUD’s as seen in the shot where Lebron jumps in the air. HUD’s are simple 2D motion graphics. You can create those yourself in After Effects or with a combination of Illustrator.
If you’re not the greatest graphics designer, then scout the internet. There’s plenty to be found 🙂
Next, we’re gonna animate these 2D graphics, so that we have some movement in the HUD’s. Of course you can also download pre-made HUD’s from Storyblocks, which we honestly did!
There’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. The real magic of the HUD’s is how you combine and blend them together.
Storyblocks
Big thanks to Storyblocks for sponsoring this video! Not only we can find a ton of HUD overlay effects, there’re also After Effects & Premiere Pro templates. You can find high quality 4K stock clips, backgrounds, presets and much more. With an active subscription you can download unlimited video assets.
