Shoot Your Head off like Oliver Tree (Premiere Pro)

Another week has passed and it’s already Friday again! That means you can start getting yourself ready for the weekend. But before you do we have an amazing Copycat Friday waiting for you! Today we’ll be having a look at music video Hurt by Oliver Tree. This one has a lot of special effects but for us one effect stood out the most and that was the tank shooting off Oliver’s head. The nice thing about this effect is that it’s a perfect match between practical effects and visual effects. From my experience this is the best way to do a special effect. Yes of course you could do this effect completely without practical effects, but to get it realistic it will be harder to achieve. Recreating shadows, light, textures, physics etc. is not easy and could give the effect easily away.

A great example of this is the ‘Billie Eilish – when the party’s over’ effect we did a few months ago. We used a healthy mix of both to create the best effect. This would also have been possible with only visual effects. But you would need a 3D render of the face which perfectly matches, create the fluid and letting it pour out of the eyes of the 3D head.

Another cool Special effect, is one from Lord of the Rings. As you know Frodo Baggings and Gandalf have a huge size difference but this isn’t done by visual effects. Peter Jackson used forced perspective to create the difference in heights.

But when you move the camera the whole perspective changes. So to fix that problem they put both table pieces and actors on dollys so that when the camera would move, the props and actors also would so the perspective would stay the same.
