Apple iPhone 13 Pro

We got our hands on the new iPhone 13 Pro Max this weekend and took it for a shoot. Cosplayer Luna Black jumped in her Katara outfit from the Avatar and modeled for our film production.

It was stunning to see her in those vibrant blue colors in a wide open field near a lake. We took a bunch of shots on both the RED Digital Cinema camera and the iPhone 13 in the new Cinematic Mode.

Cinematic Mode

The iPhone13 Pro comes with a new ‘Cinematic Mode’ in their camera app. It basically allows you to record video and chose were the focus needs to be in post production. You can even animate a rack focus.

This sounds really cool on paper, but the out of focus areas is nothing more than a blur filter. It doesn’t even look good. But where it gets even worse is on the edges on your subject. The software struggles to get a smooth transition.

It was really painful to see the ad video for this new feature. They market this as an amazing Cinema Camera that even ARRI users would bow for. I can tell you this; the iPhone 13 Pro is everything BUT cinematic!

So if you own a RED or an ARRI, don’t worry. Mobile phones are not taking over yet 😋
