5 Tips when filming during an overcast day

Overcast days are at least better than rainy days. Well, at least if you don’t need any rain effects 🙂
We usually like the sun to be there when filming outside. But mother nature isn’t always on our side. Clouds diffuses the sunlight, making everything look flat. In other words there’s not much contrast between highlights and shadows.
When inside we have some more control when adding extra lights. But outside we can’t always put up extra lighting. Definitely not in establishing or long shots. So we have to be creative to make the best of the situation.
In other words we have to find ways to create more contrast. There’re different ways to do that. Like choosing the correct background, using the right reflector and even setting the picture profile of your camera correct.
It always comes down to the same thing. And that is making sure your subject “pops out”. To have a subject pop out, there must be a contrast. And as our eyes are drawn to brighter objects it’s always a good idea to make your subject brighter as the background.
