After the success from the GH4, Panasonic created a filming standard with mirrorless cameras. The 4k possibilities were unique for a micro four thirds sensor and preformed great among it’s category rivals. The Gh5 had great shoes to fill, but after 3 years of development Panasonic made a worthy successor and their most powerful mirrorless camera to date.

The Gh5 focuses on video and with all it’s features and specs, it easily takes on rivals in this category and out preforming virtually anything for the same price. The Gh4 was the first camera in it’s class with the 4k in 30fps possibility, the GH5 took it to the next level and boosts this to 60fps. This 4k video mode has no crop in the field of view and best of all, no recording limitation! Now you can film uninterrupted for as long as your SD card allows it. And speaking about SD cards, the GH5 has two SD slots. So now it’s almost impossible to run out of recording space.

With the Gh4 the bitrate of the 4k footage could only be recorded in 8-bit/4:2:0, but the GH5 offers the ability to record in 10-bit / 4:2:2 at 30fps and in 8-bit at 50fps. If you want you can always connect an external recorder, this will allow you to record 4k in 10-bit up to 60fps. Not only do the 4k features impress, the high frame rate in 1080p are also worth mentioning. With the capability of filming at 180fps, you can now make slow motions to give your video that something extra.

Not only is the recording resolution impressive, the GH5 comes with more features to improve your film making experience. One of these feature is the in-camera stabilization, this is a 5-axis stabilizer that really does the job. Now out our own experience we can say it gives very fluent hand-held shots. This along with a new vector-scope and waveform, an optical compact XLR mic adapter, a new OLED electronic viewfinder and a full size HDMI port means the GH5 can satisfy the needs of many professionals in a very compact and portable configuration.

It’s easy to just concentrate on the video part of the GH5 because it’s so impressive, but Panasonic also did improvements on image processing. These improvements deliver photos that look more detailed and natural. With the continuous AF being important aspect these days, Panasonic did a great job by creating one that is supremely quick and even works great in very low light levels. They also improved the 4k Photo mode to a higher 6k resolution. It’s still the same principle of grabbing still from a short video clip, but now you can do this at 18 megapixels. Which makes it much more useful then the 8 megapixel from the GH4.

Our conclusion is that the Panasonic Lumix Gh5 is a worthy successor of the GH4. With greatly extending the quality and the capabilities, making it one of the most portable and professional film making cameras in it’s category and price range. The GH5 is a no-brainer for everyone, it delivers a punch on every aspect!
