The Avengers End Game
As filmmakers we all love to shoot and edit movies. Spending time behind the camera is always fun however sometimes you just want to spend it in front of it. So that’s why we decided to do that exactly for Copycat and play in a BIG HOLLYWOOD movie. Sadly because of covid (and maybe our bad acting skills) we aren’t able to do this. However we do have a big studio which we can use to accomplish our goals.
Compositing 101
To be able to put yourself in an exciting movie you first of all need to start with analyzing your shot in which you want to put yourself in. From which angle did they shoot it, which focal length, where does the light come from, etc… A proper composite doesn’t start in post production but on the set itself. You want to match the light, perspective and focal length as perfect as possible.
Once that is done you can start with the post production. First thing you’ll want to do is to position yourself in the scene, make sure the proportions between you and the rest of the scene are correct.
After this it’s time to match the colors of both clips. Make sure the contrast, saturation, brightness and temperature sit right. Premiere Pro has for example a feature called Color Match. This will copy the grading of one clip and paste it onto another. Keep in mind that this is a helpful tool to get a good starting point but you’ll have to finetune it yourself.
The final step and probably my favorite one is adding the effects on top so you really melt your shot together. In our shot for example we added some smoke, edge glow, sparks and lens flares. These things will cover your shot and hide the fact that you pasted your shot on top of the original.
