Faster trimming without a mouse

Trimming your clips in Premiere can be done relatively quick. But there is a way that you can trim them so much faster! Before you learn my secret, you must understand ripple trimming in Adobe Premiere Pro.

On the left, you want to remove a part of your clip. (The red selection) When you set your playhead and press the ‘Q’ button, everything on the left side of your playhad will be deleted. The rest of the clips on the right side of the playhead, will snap to the clip that sits in front. By pressing the ‘W’ button on your keyboard, the same thing will happen on the right side of the playhead.

Scrubbing without using a mouse

So next you need to learn how to navigate through the timeline without using the mosue. That is done by using the ‘JKL’ keys on your keyboard. You can use the ‘L’ key to move forward in the timeline. If you press it multiple times, the playback will be speed up. With the ‘J’ key you can do the same, but the playback will be in reverse, so you don’t need your mouse for going back.

Now there’s one more trick you need to master, and that is settings precise cuts. You need to be able to move one frame forward and one frame backward to get the perfect cut. To do that, you can use the arrow keys or you can press ‘J’ and ‘L’ while holding down’K’. For me, this is a litte annoying and slows me down. Instead, I set the ‘N’ key to one frame backwards and the ‘.’ key to one frame forward. That way I can navigate extremely fast, even when moving frame per frame.
