Building an editing computer

Are you a professional video editor looking to build the ultimate editing computer? Or are you just curious about the fastest editing computer on the market? When building an editing computer, you’ll want to focus on three main components: the CPU, the GPU, and the RAM.

The CPU (central processing unit) is the brain of your computer, and it’s responsible for processing all the data that your computer receives. For video editing, you don’t necessarily want a CPU with a high core count. An 8 core processor is more than be enough for editing. However if you want to be future proof you can always go for a bigger core count.

The most important aspect of the processor is the clock speed, The higher the better. Giving you much more working power, which you will definitely feel while working in After effects. So when looking for a processor, look for something like a the Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9.

The GPU (graphics processing unit) is responsible for rendering and displaying graphics. For video editing, you’ll want a GPU with a high number of CUDA cores. Because there are certain GPU accelerated effects in After Effects and Premiere Pro, which work a lot faster with more CUDA cores. Again you can look for something such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX or a Quadro series.

Finally, you’ll want plenty of RAM (random access memory) to handle the large files and data sets that come with video editing. Aim for at least 16GB, but 32GB or more is even better. This will give you more caching possibilities, making playback a lot smoother.
