Last week we did a tutorial on compositing in Premiere Pro. This was based on the videoclip Up&Up from Coldplay. It had some great responses, so we decided to cover another videoclip. This time we where inspired by Bruno Mars and his latest music video “Thats what I like”.
The simplicity in both photo and animations is what makes this music video so great. It’s very playful and fun to watch. The video editors of Bruno, probably used some more tools like Illustrator and After Effects. But in fact, it’s perfectly doable in Adobe Premiere Pro without any third party software or plugins.
Creating such scribble animations or drawings can be done within the Titler of Premiere. With the pen tool, you easily create any shape you like. If you a more user-friendly workspace you can also create your drawings inside Illustrator and then import them into Premiere Pro.
The animations from Bruno Mars – That’s what I like are either reveals, positioning (tracking) or stop motion. To reveal an animation like the finger spanning we used the circle effect and animated the radius. Other techniques used like stop motion, are just multiple graphics in different positions. In the music video, the editors also emphasized this stop motion feeling by making them 15 frames per second.
The scribble animation technique is nothing new. But often they’re a little more complex, which is why people make them inside After Effects. ‘That’s what I like’ definitely shows the opposite here. By being creative with drawings and just some very basic techniques in Premiere Pro you can create some nice scribble effects!

Awsome! Thanks
Hi! I am very grateful that you made this tutorial. I am currently interested in editing with Adobe Premiere. Unfortunately, when I opened the project file, it turned out that my Premiere Pro wasn’t the newest version and I can’t open the file. Can you kindly save the project file to an older version? Mine is 2015. Thank you so much!
