Hello you there, I want to thank you for being here with us on our favorite day. That’s right, we are again recreating an awesome effect from a new music video in our Copy Cat Friday. This time we chose Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato with the song Solo. In this video clip they have a lot of cool effects, but one effect really sticks out. And this is a smoke effect that comes from there faces. We found this really cool, so decided to recreate it with practical smoke. In the original clip it was probably made with 3D smoke. But this is rather difficult so we found it better to do with real smoke.
So now that you know we used real smoke, I want to warn you guys. Don’t set fire to anything! We used smoke bombs, we bought in a professional fireworks store. But even with professional equipment you have to be safe! So be careful and don’t harm yourself. We do a lot for the perfect picture, but hurting yourself isn’t worth it!
As you can see in the music video clip they have smoke with different colors, which they can easily do of course because they made it in 3D. But as we use real smoke we had to think of another way to give the smoke color. That’s way we used light to achieve this effect. During the shoot we used different color filters after each other, so we would have a few short fragments of colorized smoke. In post production we could then tweak them and add extra depth to them by layering them. For further adjustments we used the Lumetri Color panel in Premiere Pro, which you can use to really add contrast to them and maybe even make them darker. If you want a complete guide to color grading definitely check out our Tutorial about color grading.
